Track Review: Look What You Made Me Do

Taylor Swift. After a series of mysterious snake teasers and a slightly fumbled album cover/album title/lead single release date reveal, "Look What You Made and Do," the lead single off Taylor's sixth album, reputation, has officially entered the pop music landscape.

"Look What You Made Me Do" is different and it is definitely a grower. The harsh synths during the hook are a joy to listen to and the cheeky voicemail/pseudo-bridge recalls Britney Spears and Kendrick Lamar. Lyrically the song is not Taylor's best but it works as an introduction to the darkest shade of her musical personality we have seen yet.

The best part of "Look What You Made Me Do," is easily the pre-chorus; this section of the song is absolutely immaculate, it has everything that makes pop music work. The lyrics, the vocal layering, the production and the vocal performance are mouth-watering.

Sadly, the worst part of the song is the hook.  It is entirely too repetitive and elementary for Taylor's standards. My biggest gripe with "Look What You Made Me Do" is that it seems as if Taylor is blaming someone for her own actions instead of taking responsibility for said actions and being empowered through the process.

Overall, "Look What You Made Me Do" seems underwhelming initially, but after a few listens, this song will go down as one of Taylor's best singles of her career despite its shortcomings. "Look What You Made Me Do" does exactly what a lead single should do, it ushers in a new era in an artist's career and piques interest in what the rest of the album has to offer.
