Iggy Azalea Drops New Banger "Sally Walker"
Quiet as it's kept, Iggy has been slowly rebuilding her career the traditional way: consistently dropping strong songs and stronger visuals. Last summer, she released a solid EP entitled Survive the Summer which included the endlessly catchy "Kream."
Yesterday (Mar. 15), Iggy released her new single, "Sally Walker." Sonically, the song is somewhere between Cardi B's "Money" and Kendrick Lamar's "HUMBLE." The hefty bass line juxtaposed against a twinkling piano melody is the perfect complement to the track's lyricism. Iggy's new song, the lead single from her sophomore album, In My Defense, interpolates the popular children's nursery rhyme both lyrically and melodically. She flips the nursery rhyme to boast about her status and bask in her confidence in the face of her detractors.
Her sped up flow in the second verse works well; while her lyricism is still a bit clunky, there are some solid double entendres ("Don't get your ass dragged like RuPaul") and metaphors ("Pro'ly mad cause you ain't in my tax bracket/You bitches is broker than glass crackin'"). For an artist who was constantly plagued by ghostwriting claims, Iggy delivered two strong verses by her own pen, and that must be applauded.
From the City Girls and Rico Nasty to Megan Thee Stallion and Tierra Whack, it looks like 2019 will be the year that female rappers dominate the game. With "Sally Walker," Iggy boldly and successfully stakes a claim for her spot in the takeover.
