Track Review: City Girls & Fivio Foreign, "Top Notch"

City Girls are back! After the admirable run of "Twerkulator" and yet another moment of TikTok virality with "Shisha" alongside Saucy Santana, the rap duo have returned with their latest single. "Top Notch" finds the pair trying their hand at drill with a no-hook approach and some of their most consistent verses yet.

Produced AXL Beats, "Top Notch" is introduced by a brief verse from Yung Miami where she spends time flexing on her detractors with bars like "Bitch, I was really broke, fuck I look like tryna' go and diss? / Fuck I look like sendin' shots and not makin’ every hit?" Yung Miami's verses often tend to be shorter, but on "Top Notch" she could've given us a bit more. She sounds very comfortable and self-assured over this beat, and she maximizes every second she has on center stage. JT, who has been consistently delivering strong verses, comes through with one of her best verses yet. She follows Miami's lead and spends the duration of her verse talking her shit and bigging herself up. One thing about City Girls is that they're gonna do exactly what the title of their songs suggests. In this case, their singular goal is to remind us of why they're "Top Notch." "I'm a bad bitch, I'm a Black Barbie / Any nigga I call "bro," they fuck bitches and catch bodies," JT spits. JT does a good job of adding variety to her flows, and she rides the beat particularly well here. As for Fivio, his hot streak continues. From "Off the Gird" and "City of Gods" to "We Go Up" and this new single, Fivio continues to prove his impressive ability to create believable chemistry with any collaborator he's placed alongside. "Top Notch" is a solid offering, but the lack of a hook to tie everything together makes the track feel a bit choppy. The song's blaring bass and grimy production can only carry it so far.

Score: 67
